Old French prose cycle composed in the early 13th century, approximately c. 1215-1240. Source edition Volumes I-VII edited by H. Oskar Sommer and published 1908-1913.

Introduction - Overview

The Vulgate Cycle, also called the Lancelot-Grail Cycle, is a large anonymous Old French prose collection from the early 13th century. Its core branches bring together the early history of the Holy Grail, Merlin and the rise of Arthur, the life and love of Lancelot, the Quest of the Holy Grail and the destruction of Arthur's kingdom.

The medieval cycle was not written by one securely identified author. It is the product of anonymous Old French authors and compilers, and its component works were composed and assembled over time. The texts themselves sometimes invoke authorial traditions such as Walter Map, but modern scholarship treats the cycle as anonymous.

Mythopouch uses H. Oskar Sommer's public-domain scholarly edition, The Vulgate Version of the Arthurian Romances, as its source witness. Volumes I-VII were published by the Carnegie Institution of Washington between 1908 and 1913. The source is principally an edited Old French text, not an English translation.

The Work...

The Vulgate Cycle

Sommer's source set is arranged across seven textual volumes. Volume I contains Lestoire del Saint Graal. Volume II contains Lestoire de Merlin. Volumes III, IV and V contain the three parts of Le Livre de Lancelot del Lac. Volume VI contains Les Aventures ou La Queste del Saint Graal together with La Mort le Roi Artu. Volume VII is the supplement Le Livre d'Artus, with glossary.

The principal Vulgate Cycle is commonly described as five major prose romances: the History of the Holy Grail, Merlin, the Lancelot Proper, the Quest of the Holy Grail and the Death of Arthur. The Lancelot Proper is the immense centre of the cycle, following Lancelot from his upbringing by the Lady of the Lake through his service at Arthur's court and his relationship with Queen Guinevere. The Quest then shifts the spiritual centre to Galahad, Perceval and Bors, while the Mort Artu brings the fellowship and Arthur's kingdom to their end.

Le Livre d'Artus is preserved separately in Sommer's seventh volume as a supplement. It is an alternative continuation of Merlin and preserves material not arranged in the same way as the five principal branches. For Mythopouch it is retained as its own source volume rather than silently merged into another branch.

Because Sommer edited the medieval French directly, these PDFs are source witnesses rather than modern English reading editions. The Mythopouch retelling is therefore kept separate and states clearly that it is original modern educational wording, not a translation of the Old French.

The Vulgate Cycle is one of the most important medieval sources for later Arthurian tradition. It develops major forms of the Grail story, the love of Lancelot and Guinevere, Galahad's achievement, the Siege Perilous, the Round Table fellowship and the final collapse of Arthur's realm.
