Introduction

This is the Mythopouch retelling of Homer's Iliad, written for readers aged 15 and up. It is original modern educational wording, not Homer and not a translation of the Greek. The complete retelling brings all seven volumes together in one 160-page PDF, and each volume is also supplied as a separate shorter PDF.

The retelling follows the poem from the quarrel between Achilles and Agamemnon through the fighting at Troy, the deaths of Patroclus and Hector, Priam's journey to Achilles, and Hector's funeral. Volume VII adds pronunciation guidance, discussion questions and character reference tables.

What this retelling is

The retelling is organised into seven volumes and thirty-two chapters, including twenty-nine narrative chapters and three appendix chapters:

Vol. 1 - The Quarrel (26 pages)
Chapters 1-5

Vol. 2 - The Battle Joined (27 pages)
Chapters 6-10

Vol. 3 - The Great Day (21 pages)
Chapters 11-14

Vol. 4 - The Day of Sorrow (20 pages)
Chapters 15-18

Vol. 5 - The Rage of Achilles (26 pages)
Chapters 19-23

Vol. 6 - The Taming of Achilles (27 pages)
Chapters 24-29

Vol. 7 - Guides and Tables (22 pages)
Chapters 30-32

The complete retelling is 160 pages. The separate volume page totals do not equal the complete PDF page total because each individual volume repeats its own cover, contents and source-note material.

How to use it with the Sources page

Use The Iliad of Homer Sources page when you want the historical English source witness. The downloadable source is Samuel Butler's 1898 English prose translation.

Use this Retellings page when you want a modern continuous educational reading. Each retelling file states that it is original Mythopouch wording based on Homer's Iliad, traditionally dated to about 750 BCE, and that Butler's 1898 translation was used as a public-domain English witness for checking. The retelling is not Butler's translation and it is not the Greek text.

The complete retelling and the seven individual volumes can therefore be used alongside the Sources page: the source preserves the historical English witness, while the retelling supplies modern organisation, pronunciation help, explanatory notes, reflection questions and reference material.

Summary

A modern 15+ Mythopouch retelling of Homer's Iliad in seven volumes, following Achilles' wrath, the battle for Troy, Patroclus and Hector, Priam's appeal, and a final guides-and-tables appendix.

Sources & Retellings Cultural Context Notice

Mythology developed across different cultures, periods and traditions, and there is rarely one universally accepted version of a story. Mythopouch approaches these traditions with respect while remaining faithful to the complexity of the surviving material. Retellings and educational content may interpret or adapt historical sources, but are not presented as definitive accounts of any culture, religion or belief system.
