Modern History

Griffin mythology is more than an old tale of lions, eagles and guarded gold. Explore how ancient art, real animal behaviour, flight science and modern fossil theories help explain why this extraordinary creature has endured for thousands of years.

This Mythopouch insight examines Serket, Tawaret and the Serpopard together: the scorpion goddess who opens or closes the throat, the hippo guardian of childbirth, and the long-necked beast on the Narmer Palette that never became a god.

Calibos is not in Homer or Apollodorus. This insight explains why Clash of the Titans invented him in 1981, how he took the place of Perseus’s real rival Phineus, and why the 2010 remake fused him with Acrisius. Learn the source first, then what cinema added.
